GeoNAMES Explorer

Overview

Place names help us identify historic, cultural and natural features on the landscape. Name origins may reveal histories about the people, place and their community.
The GeoNAMES Explorer is a mapping tool to display and search for current and historic NS place name points. A key objective is to include the narrative with the result
when an object is selected.

Screen Overview

The image at left shows the main components of the GeoNAMES Explorer and identifies the key functions and features available to the user.

Layers

The layers listed in the table of contents are all available for display by clicking the check box next to the layer you wish to see.Individual layers or all layers in a layer group (e.g. Delimiter Boundaries) can be turned on or off this way.

Not all layers are visible at all zoom levels. Some layers are scale dependent and will turn on or off depending on the display scale of the map. The layers listed will change as the map scale changes, with more layers becoming visible as you zoom in, less as you zoom out.

Clicking the  symbol next to each layer will pop up layer information window. Click the symbol next to Nova Scotia GeoNAMES layer to download the official names file.

The user can expand or collapse the Layers and Legend sections by clicking anywhere on the title bar.
